Dr. Heather Cygan was born and raised in South Florida and has resided in Atlanta for the past 19 years. She completed her undergraduate degree in Psychology, with a minor in Sociology, at Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, GA, and went on to obtain her M.S. and Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from Mercer University’s department of College of Health Professions in Atlanta, GA. During graduate school, she completed extensive training in childhood assessment and therapy in a private practice setting in Midtown Atlanta. She then received training in a variety of therapeutic interventions and modalities in an integrated community clinic in the Metro Atlanta area. There, she worked with a diverse population of adults who presented with various behavioral and medical challenges including anxiety, depression, chronic pain, endocrine challenges, immunodeficiencies, substance abuse, gender-confirming surgical procedures, and complex trauma.
Dr. Cygan received advanced training in both individual and group therapy at the Atlanta VA Medical Center where she was trained in Cognitive Processing Therapy and other trauma-focused interventions, assisted and led group therapy sessions focusing on anger management, mindfulness, women’s trauma, as well as reducing anxiety/panic. She went on to complete her residency at Georgia State University’s Counseling Center where she received training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Suicide Prevention via the Beck Institute. She provided individual and group therapy, in addition to engaging in multiple community outreach and psychoeducational presentations focusing on a variety of mental health concerns, including self-care, anxiety, conflict resolution, time management, increasing focus and concentration, and stress management. During her residency, Dr. Heather Cygan completed her doctoral dissertation, which investigated the use of virtual reality to promote and facilitate mindfulness. Lastly, Dr. Heather Cygan completed her postdoctoral fellowship at a thriving private practice in Midtown Atlanta, where she continues to practice and maintain a professional relationship.
